See Japan’s Rural & Natural Beauty

Delve into Japan’s agrarian past, culinary traditions and spectacular landscapes with tours of Sendai and Shizukuishi.

About Your Trip

Discover a pair of Japan’s most visually striking locations on this DreamTrip to Shizukuishi and Sendai. In Shizukuishi, cruise around Matsushima Bay before traveling to Koiwai Farm, known for its dairy products and pastoral setting. Enjoy a delicious lunch of wanko soba noodles, served in bite-size bowls in an all-you-can eat fashion. Try your hand at making rice crackers before returning to the hotel to soak in its soothing hot springs.

On the following day, journey to Sendai for a full-day tour, including a stop at Chusonji Temple, a historic site believed to date back to 850 A.D. Discover a stunning waterfall during a visit to Geibikei, a gorge named for a limestone structure that resembles a lion’s nose.

What we love:
• Wanko soba noodles are served with an array of condiments, including tuna sashimi, nameko mushrooms with a gelatinous coating and harako-meshi (salmon roe).
• A popular purchase by tourists visiting Japan is an omiyage, typically a special boxed food item; different from a souvenir, the omiyage is given as a gift rather than kept as a memento.
• Tourists attempt to toss “luck stones” during a tour of the Geibikei, a gorge created by the Satetsu River.

Destination

Bordered by zelkova trees and filled with ample greenery in the city’s center, Sendai, Japan, is renowned as the “City of Trees” because of its commitment to green spaces. With more than 1 million people, it is also considered an economic and political powerhouse in the Tohoku region. A substantial number of government offices are based in Sendai, and along with the jobs they bring, the city boasts abundant retail and service enterprises.

Sendai is also the birthplace of grilled beef tongue. Tasting this cuisine, served with ox tail soup or another side, is a must. And finding a restaurant that serves the delicacy is not difficult, as there are more than 100 in the city that do.
